Take Control of Your Online Browsing Experience

Deal with web annoyances as a pro! Are you tired of seeing endless ads on Tumblr, or in fact anywhere on the web? Here’s a simple fix for you.

  • Install uBlock or AdBlock: First, if you haven't already, install uBlock (or AdBlock) from here.

uBlock

  • Add a Custom Filter: Go to uBlock's options and add this filter in the "My filters" tab:

    ! tumblr sponsored postswww.tumblr.com##div.is_recommended

  • Apply and Refresh: Click "Apply Changes" and then reload your Tumblr page. Enjoy an ad-free experience!

This applies to virtually any website. Some use real sneaky tricks like Meta, generating styling on the fly, what makes combatting those particularly difficult.

Update 2023

  • The use of secure DNS and blackhole blocking is becoming more popular, with tools like Pi-hole for home servers and DNS secure apps for phones enhancing online freedom and privacy.

Developer Note

  • Not all FREE browsers and IDEs are "good free".

Chromium and Codium

  • Google Chrome is based on OpenSource project Chromium. Chromium source code can be seen and (with some skill) edited by anyone. Some extra parts of Chrome's source code are closed and only low-level inspection can reveal what and where Alphabet does with which of YOUR data.
  • Same for Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code. By using those you have no transparency. You can minimize which data flows to the Microsoft servers, but the best way is e.g. to use Visual Studio CODIUM, which the VSCode is based on.
  • Tooling is evolving too. Github supports VSCode Server, meaning you can code, debug and test your app in the browser without any local installations. For the web tooling (JS/HTML/CSS) there were already abundance of such platforms like codepen.io and jsbin.com

The choice is yours, chose wisely.
